UKMT Junior Maths Challenge

Over 20 students recently took part in the UKMT Junior Maths challenge.

The UKMT Individual Maths Challenges are lively, intriguing multiple choice question papers, which are designed to stimulate interest in maths in large numbers of students. They attract entries from over 4000 schools and colleges throughout the UK. Questions from the Junior Challenge can be used as enrichment material in the classroom across the ability range.

The Junior Challenge is aimed at the top third of pupils in year groups 7 and 8. Enthusiastic students were encouraged to enter the Challenges and spent some time beforehand testing their skills with some example questions from previous years. The challenge involves answering 25 multiple choice questions in one hour and is sat in school under normal exam conditions.

The top 40% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3 and each institution receives a Best in School certificate so we are eagerly awaiting the results to find out how our students have done.

Cashless System

Tonypandy Community College’s cashless system in the College canteen will be fully operational
from Monday April 30th. All students and staff have now had a finger scan taken – a biometric finger
picture not a finger print – and can now load money onto the system at two separate stations in the
College or by cheque at reception. Students who qualify for free school meals will have the daily
allowance loaded on automatically for them. [If you think your child may qualify for Free school
meals please click here.] Parents can keep track of their child’s spending by contacting the College at
any time.

We have had 6 boys represent the Rhondda District side this year these are:

Gerwyn Coleman
Dai Harries
Curtis Povey
Lewis Evans
Brad Jones- Year 9
Brad Daniels- called in for the final due to injury

This is the highest number of students we have had involved in a Rhondda District side.

The boys had many difficult fixtures on their way to the final, they got through semi-finals by the skin of their teeth as they drew with Llanelli 17 point a piece, Rhondda went through due to a superior try count. The beat Cardiff District in the final 12-10, with Gerwyn Coleman scoring the winning try.

Gerwyn, Dai and Curtis have been involved in the squad all season touring New Zealand earlier in the year, Lewis Evans was called back into the squad after a number of excellent performances for the school team. The both brad’s were called in due to injuries, Brad Jones will have another crack at the competition next year as he is only in year 9.

Well done to all The boys, we are very proud!.
