The BTEC First Certificate in Public Services provides you with the knowledge, skills and understanding you will need when moving towards a career in the uniformed services, such as the police, emergency fire services or prison service.
The course is designed to enable you to study other subjects alongside your BTEC First Certificate. It comprises three units, which provide a total of 180 guided learning hours. Depending on your locally available programme of study, the structure of the course allows you to develop your interests and gain a broad foundation, and it introduces you to new areas, such as citizenship, the individual and society, uniformed public service fitness or community and cultural awareness.
Where will this qualification take me?
The BTEC First Certificate in Public Services can be a stepping stone for successful candidates towards entering initial employment as, for example, a police community support officer, an army soldier or a Royal Air Force airman/woman.
Further vocational and academic qualifications
The achievement of the BTEC First Certificate has the equivalence of 2 GCSEs graded A*-C. If you achieve an overall pass grade or better in the BTEC First Certificate in Public Services, it is possible for you to progress further to the BTEC First Diploma in Public Services, or to enrol on another Level 2 programme, such as a relevant NVQ, or to move on to a higher level qualification such as a Level 3 BTEC National Certificate specialising in your preferred field.
