Parents Supporting Maths

‘Do you want to:
• Work with your child to develop their maths skills?
• Improve your own maths skills?

In this section there are 6 units of the essential mathematical topics taught through years 7, 8 and 9.

Maths is a skill based subject, and the successful development of these skills is dependent on the practise done outside of lessons. As in other skill areas such as sport, the technique is taught in lessons, but the techniques will only become skills when practised until they become second nature. Successful sportspeople are those who can motivate themselves to put in the extra training and effort necessary and maintain this in competitions and it is the same in mathematics. If students are to gain their maximum potential grade they must be prepared to work outside of lessons, attend extra practise sessions, and maintain this right up until the examination.

Please test your mathematical skills by working through these 6 units. If you have any difficulties follow the revision links in the main maths page to learn the relevant techniques and then attempt the units again.

These units are not necessarily in the order taught in the maths lessons at Tonypandy Community College, but if studied in addition to the school work, then students will be ‘going that extra mile’ to achieve success.

If students need more help and guidance they should attend the maths drop-in sessions which are provided at the college, or arrange to see their maths teacher who will be only too happy to help!’
