The Modern Foreign Languages Department aims to provide a high quality, balanced curriculum which allows all pupils to achieve to the best of their ability and which enables pupils to have covered the skills necessary for them to use language in a real context. Spanish is taught as taster sessions throughout Key Stage 3 and is an option for GCSE along with French. French is offered at AS and Advanced level.

The Key Stage 3 schemes of work have recently been rewritten in order to create a ‘virtual journey’ to the chosen country. As an additional motivatory factor, the department has implemented certification of Asset languages at the end of year nine for students.

The Department aims to offer opportunities for students to have the knowledge and ownership of the language skills necessary to express themselves and show understanding of the tools needed to be confident and eloquent in the world of work.

Students will cover a wide range of skills in lessons. These include team work, listening, reasoning, time management, problem solving, taking risks, questioning, decision making, communication and collaboration.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department currently comprises of 3 members of staff:

Mrs Joanne Ennis Leader of Learning MFL
Miss Tracey Mein Teacher of French
Sarah Chene Foreign Language Assistant

The classrooms are fully equipped with Interactive Smartboards. Lessons are fun and interactive and cover range of teaching and learning styles to suit the needs of all learners. The library has recently been restocked with modern, relevant French books to encourage independent reading.

European Day of Languages 2010

European day of languages was celebrated in the College on Monday 27th September.

All key stages discussed the theme of the week ‘languages,’ during form period and took part in a quiz, guessing greetings in different languages.

During the lunchtime the canteen served up a variety of different foods from France, Italy and the UK, with students having to guess which country that particular food came from. The canteen was decorated with flags from various European countries and menus in French, Spanish and Welsh were displayed. Year 7 also took part in a taster session with food from around Europe. Year 7 students thoroughly enjoyed trying to guess where the food was from with many brave students tasting olives, houmous, pitta bread, cheeses, pizza, and sausages.

The Languages Department took on a German and Spanish theme for the day with students from all year groups joining in the celebration. All Key Stage 3 students learnt various topics of Spanish and German taught through interactive resources. All students were very enthusiastic and enjoyed the day.

French trip to Amiens.

42 students from Years 8, 9 and 11 have just returned from a weekend in Rue, Amiens in the North of France. Students had the opportunity to experience French culture and to practise their French, whilst staying in a Chateau built for Louis XIV around 1714.

During their stay students made mayonnaise with a French chef, learnt how to make goats cheese, tasted chocolate at the chocolate factory and ate the local delicacies, including frogs legs and snails. Students also conducted surveys, using their French at the market and visited the cathedral and city of Amiens.

A great time was had by all students and staff and we are looking forward to returning to the chateau next year!
