(Click here for the latest "Art" information)

mannequin imagesmannequinsThe Technology Faculty is an area of the school which allows students to express themselves in a range of different medium. It gives the opportunity to develop skills that may not have been previously available to those students.

We offer a variety of courses through all key stages, under the four main headings of Art (including Photography and Graphics), Design Technology, Catering and Health and Social. The learners are able, through meetings and advice, to choose the most suitable qualification for their individual needs. The examination results within all areas of the faculty are excellent.

Alongside the curriculum, the faculty runs homework clubs both in Design Technology and Art. Students are free to make use of the facilities to finish off homework or to extend their skills within the different areas with additional tutor support. Art, Design Technology and the Textiles department are all involved with the school production of “Little Shop of Horrors”. This is being done by volunteer students that have chosen to stay after school to undertake this huge project.

Students are given the opportunity to take part in trips to London and Cardiff as part of their KS3, 4 and 5 Art curriculum. This allows students to learn through a range of enriching experiences. During these visits students learn about Welsh and National heritage to inform and inspire their studies in the subject. The Art department, alongside E3+ provision, provide students with the opportunity to work with specialist artists including sculptors and textile artists. The culmination of curriculum and extra curricular work is celebrated by the Faculty in an annual Art exhibition which attracts many visitors.

Learners are encouraged to communicate through the design process, sketch books and written work within the faculty and this gives the students an all-round experience and development of skills for the wider world.

Max Boyce Project

At the beginning of September students at Tonypandy Community College were invited to take part in an Art project to paint and illustrate one of Max Boyce’s songs. We were invited by the Rhondda Heritage Park along with two other local schools to take part in the project to form an exhibition called ‘Boyce Zone’, which was on displayed in an exhibition last month.

Students have worked studiously on this project since September. They have researched the project and song ‘Rhondda Grey’ thoroughly; writing to well known Welsh artists Kevin Sinnott, Iwan Gwyn Parry and Ogwyn Davies who were happy to offer advice and guidance to the students. In addition the students took part in an artist workshop with up and coming Welsh artist Liam O’Connor who was heralded as ‘one to watch in 2010′ by the Western Mail. Eight students in total submitted work for the exhibition and it was with pride and excitement that students and parents attended the exhibition opening last Thursday.

Little did we know that there was a prize to be awarded and chosen by Max Boyce for the work which he felt illustrated his songs the most successfully. Originally just one work was to be chosen but eventually Boyce could not choose just one of the many works on display. We are very pleased to announce that the first prize was awarded to a joint entry by Leah Hughes, Kyle Povey and Gabrielle Shallish and in joint second prize Gabrielle Shallish was once again chosen, alongside a student from Aberdare boys, for a piece she had made herself.

Art Exhibition June 2010

On 15th June the Art Department hosted their annual art exhibition. The decision was made this year to include work from all students at KS4 and KS5 as opposed to selecting work as in previous years; this reflects the success of the Art Department and standard of work which is now being produced across key stages. The Art Department were delighted that we were able to join forces with the catering department this year who prepared refreshments for the exhibition.

The exhibition was a great success and attended by parents, grand parents and members of the local community. We were lucky to have fantastic weather on the evening and once visitors had enjoyed viewing their work they sat in the sun enjoying freshly prepared food and a glass of punch!
