Time Banking For Schools
Time School credits value time that students and/or parents and community members give to support their school community. The credits are earned through time contributed to a menu of school community activities. The credits utilise ‘excess capacity’ in the school (e.g. school concerts and IT facilities) and in local leisure and recreational services (e.g. spare seats at the cinema) making the system low cost and sustainable. The time banks enrol many of the most disengaged young people as constructive contributors to the community, and positively ‘thank’ them for their contribution. These young people will develop improved attitudes to their school and to their community, with increased self-esteem will come improved learning outcomes and better engagement with school, learning and training.
Students, Parents and Community Members that are actively engaged in the school community have better relationships with the school and this encourages learning.
Julie Atkins, Community Manager at Tonypandy Community College says “the introduction of time banking has dramatically improved the number of students that are positively participating in the college. It has especially helped with identify all the great work being given by the more ’silent’ students! The one that has always helped but wasn’t a natural leader or even a student who played up! We are really excited about the future and the possibilities that have been opened up by being part of Time Schools”
Below is a table outlining some of the “Time In” activities that are available in Tonypandy.
